It’s such a wonderful thing when people gather together for a good cause like they are this weekend at the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life. People will gather Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. at Hanapepe Soccer Field to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have suffered from cancer. Patti Ornellas, community manager of the event, says there are plenty of businesses to thank for their generous contributions this year: Alakaina Foundation-Manu Kai, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, Syngenta Hawaii, Bow Construction Management Service, Clinical Laboratories Hawaii, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences, Kauai Community Federal Credit Union, Kukuiula Development, Smith’s Motor Boat Service, Aqua Engineers, BASF Plant Science, GIMC, Matson, Aunty Lilikoi, General Dynamics and Lawai Beach Resort

Koloa Landing Poipu Beach Wyndham Grand Resort offered a luau March 28 in celebration of Prince Kuhio‘s birthday. The evening of Hawaiian entertainment included Na Hoku Hanohano award-winner Weldon Kekauoha, along with Na Molokama and Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala, Tamatea Nui o Kauai, Aulani Viluan and Na Haumana o Kawaikini. Proceeds from the luau helped fund Kawaikini Hawaiian Language Immersion Charter School

Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay recently helped install a new paved block at Hanalei Elementary School that will help children cross a typically muddy area. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation recently created a program called “Friends” to support projects like this and donated $10,000 to an approved nonprofit of Rotary’s choosing. The club picked Kauai Branch of Hawaii Foodbank, which will use the funds to support three North Shore food pantries …

St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue will celebrate Father Bill Miller‘s last weekend on Kauai with a plethora of festivities. The author and music lover is moving to New Orleans to become rector at Christ Episcopal Church. On Friday (April 24) at 7 p.m., the public is invited to a “Music and Memories” concert featuring artists who have performed at the church during Miller’s tenure, including Alan Van Zee, Karen Dickinson, Kauai Voices directed by Randy Leonard, Laine Griffith, Swing Sisters, Aki Conquest, David Yukimura, John Gilleran and Terra Jean Otto.
