Ditching Coffee Cold Turkey

About a month ago, someone near and dear to me bet that I couldn’t go without coffee for two weeks. I took the challenge, and not only did I become $50 richer, but have stayed mostly java-free since. I didn’t realize how much I craved the sweet nectar until the first few days of my detox, which greeted me with mind-numbing headaches and fatigue (and I mean multiple long naps per day). Since then, I’ve been able to wake up with more ease, and the midafternoon slump is a thing of the past. However, I still allow myself an indulgence every now and again, but only if it’s good enough to splurge. I found just that place in Lawai called Dark Roost. It’s in the vintage white trailer by the old Lawai warehouse and is run by the cutest couple, Stasia and Jon Estep. If you are a coffee lover, you’ll especially love their cold brew …

Lila Metzger and Kauai Underground Artists (KUGA) recently moved to a new space while they wait to set up permanent shop in the Lawai warehouse (the same spot where Dark Roost is perched). For now, KUGA is moving into the former Scotty’s Music space in Kalaheo, in the same building as Kauai Kookie Bakery and Kitchen Restaurant. All Poipu classes are now held at this location. Enrollment currently is open for adult Ragga (Jamaican Dancehall) and adult contemporary classes. In addition, KUGA is accepting applications from keiki ages 6-10 for its Art and Dance Summer camp. And don’t forget, its annual Love Life festival is set for June 6 from 4 to 9:30 p.m. at Kauai Community College’s Performing Arts Center, so mark your calendars …

I love when artists incorporate nature into their creations. Daniel Finchum presents his first solo exhibition, which will open with a reception Friday (May 22) from 6 to 9 p.m. in Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center. He refers to his sculptures as “land art” inspired by Kauai’s beauty. He creates them in and out of natural elements and snaps photos of the completed work. Visit kauaiainaart.com to view his art … I hope everyone remembered to call their mom on Mother’s Day (I thought whoever placed the signs along Maluhia Road May 10 reminding people to do so was clever). Congrats to Zephyr Pearl of Kapahi, who is the well-deserved third annual Mom Scholarship recipient. She won $3,000 in services at Dillberg Integrated Healthcare clinic in Poipu for one year. She was selected because of her ability to overcome of challenges she has faced in her life, and her willpower to lead a healthy life and improve her well being …
